REGISTRATION:

INSTALLATION:
The Remus Limited application can be placed anywhere on your hard drive. The Remus Limited Extension should be placed in the Extensions Folder (within the System Folder). If you drag it onto the System Folder icon (*not* into the System Folder’s window), it will automatically be placed in the right folder.
If you have a SCSI accelerator, you must also place the appropriate extension from the “Third Party” folder into your Extensions Folder. If you do not install this extension, any drives attached to your SCSI accelerator will not be visible.

MANUAL ADDENDUM:
The Remus 1.1 Addendum included with this package contains important information about the changes made to Remus since version 1.0, such as bootable partitions. The note, About Remus Limited, contains important information about the differences between Remus and Remus Limited. Please keep both of these with your Remus manual.
UPDATES:
As Remus continues to develop, updates with new features and bug fixes will become available. The latest free update will normally be available from Trillium Research’s technical support bulletin board, at (715) 381-1833. We will also make an effort to notify registered users of new releases, so please send in your registration card.
SCSI TERMINATION:
Remus places heavy demands on SCSI hardware. It is critical that all rules for proper SCSI operation be followed, especially when high-speed SCSI accelerators are used. This means that termination must be correct, cable lengths must not exceed specifications, and high-quality (preferably shielded) cables should be used.
If you are using a SCSI accelerator with a fast SCSI-2 drive, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you use “active” SCSI termination. Please read the section in the Remus manual on SCSI termination for more details.
If you need to purchase an external active terminator, contact your board or drive supplier, or another vendor of SCSI-related products.
USERS OF MACINTOSH PC EXCHANGE:
There is a bug in Macintosh PC Exchange 1.0.1 which can cause minor problems after creating a partition. If Macintosh PC Exchange is installed on your system, we recommend quitting and relaunching Remus after you have created your partitions to avoid any potential problems.
NEW FEATURES:
To allow Remus to be used with unattended file servers, a timer has been added to the dialog box which appears when a problem is detected when booting. If no keyboard or mouse activity is detected within one minute, Remus will automatically continue the boot process as though the “continue” button had been clicked.
The Remus Mounter control panel allows Remus partitions to be unmounted and remounted. To use the control panel, simply open it, click on a partition, and click on the “Mount” or “Unmount” button. As with Remus itself, the mounter control panel will only work with partitions on drives which were turned on during the startup process.
The Remus Monitor and Responder no longer require that AppleTalk be turned on. The local machine can be monitored even when AppleTalk is not installed. In addition, the Remus Standard Notifier has been integrated into the Remus Monitor control panel. Only the Remus Monitor control panel is required to monitor the status of Remus partitions.
USING REMUS WITH SPLIT SCSI BUSES:
If SCSI Manager 4.3 is installed on your Macintosh computer, you can split Remus partitions between an accelerator and the built-in SCSI port. If your Macintosh computer has both SCSI Manager 4.3 and dual SCSI ports, you can split Remus partitions between the two built-in ports. Either of these will generally result in higher performance than using only one built-in SCSI port, or only an accelerator.
To create a split partition, just attach the drives you wish to use to the appropriate SCSI buses; Remus will automatically recognize them. It is important to correctly terminate all SCSI buses; please refer to your Apple documentation, or to your hard drive or accelerator vendor, for information on how each bus should be terminated. INCORRECT TERMINATION CAN CAUSE DATA LOSS. As with all SCSI buses, we highly recommend using active termination.
On Macintoshes with both SCSI Manager 4.3 and dual SCSI ports, Remus will label one bus as “internal” and the other as either “external” or “built-in”, depending on whether an internal connector exists. To verify that your partition has been split, check that the drives you are using are listed under different SCSI buses in the partition list. (See page 51 of the manual for a description of the Remus drives entry of the partition list.)
